The Cool Vest is a very different thing from a KoolTie. The vest wraps your torso in a cooling environment. Sue finds it possible to work in the garden in the sun or to cook a dinner with her Cool Vest. You may have seen Paula Radcliffe wearing one before the start of the marathon. Here is Sue wearing a tan vest.

The Cool Vest works by phase change from solid to liquid rather than from liquid to vapour. The cooling elements are rather like freezer packs, but they freeze at 59F or about 15C, the temperature of a cool swimming pool (so you can press them against your skin). The packs will regenerate in iced water or a fridge  in  20-30 minutes and will then keep you cool for about two to three hours.

These vests have a great, and obvious, advantage over actively refrigerated garments in that you can work while wearing them. They are also much cheaper at £200 rather than over £1000.

The vest is a zip fronted sleeveless waistcoat with shoulder straps and elasticated side straps adjustable by Velcro. If you are prepared to wait while it is made, we can now provide CoolVests in your choice of colour.

Beware of using domestic freezer packs. These are not at all the same thing. They are so cold that they can damage your body by freezing and at the same time lead to overheating in the core. This is because the very cold pack against the skin causes the surface blood vessels to shut down even when your body core wants them to take heat away.
